What’s Caught Our Eye in University Marketing & Recruitment in September/October

Grab yourself a brew and take five (see what we’ve done there). Here’s five university initiatives and campaigns that have caught our eye. They might inspire your own strategy or marketing, or just simply give you some time out from your busy day.

We’re all seeing an increase in interest in distance/online courses. The University of Law’s campaign is simple and clear, with eye-catching creative and headline to attract those looking for online learning.


UCL’s campaign curates and tells the stories of their disruptive discoveries, showcasing the real-world impact their research is having on communities. While this campaign ran in 2019 it recently caught our eye again after winning the Marketing Campaign of the Year at the PIEoneer Awards . Many universities will be familiar with the challenge of communicating their research achievements as part of their public engagement and brand reputation. This campaign offers a good solution to that problem, using a simple slogan and hashtag #MadeatUCL effectively to expand their organic reach.

The University of Oxford has launched Black Academic Futures Scholarships to increase the proportion of black and mixed-black British students taking their postgraduate programmes. This offer is part of the University's existing scholarships and funding for under-represented groups and it’s great to see more attention being paid to widening participation at postgraduate level.

Fully-funded by Government, the programme has been designed by leading small business and enterprise experts from a consortium of 20 business schools across the UK to support the resilience, recovery and growth of SMEs during and after COVID-19. Another example of how universities are supporting businesses, the economy and community during these tough times. While providing an opportunity to showcase their expertise and Business, Management and Leadership provision.

The sector’s response in the fight against the pandemic has been far-reaching, from developing vaccinations to supporting communities. We’ve seen numerous updates from UK universities across social channels, so it’s great to see this fantastic initiative which collates and showcases the important work universities are doing, providing a bit of much needed and well deserved good PR.
