Pride Month 2025: University LGBTQ+ Initiatives That Have Caught our Eye

Pride Month is an important celebration of the LGBTQ+ community which honours its history, achievements and the ongoing fight for equality.You can find a useful glossary of terms here. It’s a time to embrace acceptance and diversity while reflecting on the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.

This year, we’re taking a closer look at what universities across the UK are doing to mark Pride Month and we've picked 5 standout examples.

#1 Queen Mary Explores the Global Roots of Pride in 'Transnational History' Webinar

Queen Mary University of London is hosting a webinar, titled Transnational History.The webinar delves into the global roots of the Pride movement, reframing the Stonewall Riots as a coordinated act of resistance led by experienced activists with transnational connections. They explore how Stonewall helped ignite a worldwide movement for queer liberation that transformed the course of LGBTQ+ political history.

#2 UCL Champions Queer Visibility in STEM with LGBTQ+ Science Research Showcase

UCL is hosting the LGBTQ+ Science Research Showcase - an in-person event celebrating the contributions of LGBTQ+ scientists within the university community. Organised by the Faculty of Brain Sciences LGBTQ+ Equity group, in collaboration with other queer networks at UCL, the showcase provides a platform for early-career researchers to share their work and connect with peers. The event also invites the wider scientific community to engage with LGBTQ+ research and reflect on the value of diversity in advancing scientific innovation and inclusivity in academia.

#3 University of Bedfordshire Hosts LGBTQ+ Summer Research Showcase on Inclusion in Sport

The University of Bedfordshire is hosting the LGBTQ+ Summer Research Showcase the event focuses on transgender and non-binary inclusion in Physical Education, physical activity and sport. Featuring six research presentations and interactive Q & A sessions, the showcase aims to spark critical dialogue around equity and representation in these fields. Led by the LGBTQ+ Staff Alliance, this initiative reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive spaces and amplifying voices across the LGBTQ+ community - particularly at a time when rights and visibility remain under threat globally.

#4 University of Strathclyde Delivers LGBTQI+ Equity & Inclusion Training for Staff

The University of Strathclyde is offering an online LGBTQI+ Equity & Inclusion Training session aimed at deepening understanding and support for LGBTQI+ individuals within the university community. Delivered by the Equality & Diversity Office, this two-hour interactive workshop covers essential topics including LGBTQI+ terminology, historical and legal contexts and existing inequalities. Through case studies and practical tips, staff participants are encouraged to explore ways to foster more inclusive environments for both students and colleagues.

#5 University of Sussex Celebrates LGBTQ+ Staff with 'Pride at Sussex' Exhibition

The University of Sussex is marking Pride Month 2025 with Pride at Sussex, a powerful photography and written word exhibition celebrating the experiences of LGBTQ+ staff. The exhibition features portraits of staff or campus locations that hold personal meaning for them, accompanied by captions reflecting their lived experiences at Sussex. An accompanying Padlet offers extended reflections, providing deeper insight into each story. The project is led by James Ward-Lee, former Chair of the Trans and Non-Binary Staff Network, alongside members of the LGBTQ Steering Group and highlights the importance of visibility, storytelling, and representation within the university community.
