5 University Wellbeing Initiatives That Have Caught our Eye

We are celebrating Mental Health Awareness week (Monday 12 May 2025 – Sunday 18 May 2025) – a valuable opportunity to highlight the growing importance of student wellbeing. With increasing academic pressures, universities across the UK and beyond are finding new ways to promote mental health and build resilience within their communities.

We've taken a look at what universities across the UK are doing to support their students this mental health month and picked out our 5 favourite examples.

#1 Taking a moment in nature with a Gardening Session by RE:GEN - Imperial College London

RE:GEN, Imperial College Union's student-led sustainability initiative is hosting a gardening session.

This relaxed and collaborative gardening session is designed to help students reconnect with nature. Guided by knowledgeable volunteers, they'll get hands-on with light gardening activities like planting and working with soil, all in a friendly and supportive atmosphere

#2 Self Care Fair at City, St George's - University of London

To support students during the busy exam period the university has introduced a Self Care Fair, where local businesses will be offering free samples and products to help students look after their wellbeing.

They are also running "The Study Well campaign", which is also designed to help manage stress over the exam period. The campaign includes journalling sessions, Tote Bag designing workshops and a Mental Health and Wellbeing Day.

#3 Exploring and Overcoming Imposter Phenomenon at The University of Oxford

The University of Oxford will be taking a look at Imposter Phenomenon during their workshop. The workshop will provide students a safe and confidential space to explore unique, lived experience of IP.

It will also provide a range of practicle takeaways to help students manage feelings of self-doubt.

#4 Mindfulness painting at The University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth is inviting students to slow down and reconnect through a creative mindfulness painting session. Designed to promote relaxation and self-care during a busy academic term, the event blends art with wellbeing in a calm, supportive environment.

#5 Crystal Sound Bowl Meditation with UCL

University College London is offering a Crystal Sound Bowl Meditation which will focus on the soothing vibrations of crystal bowls tuned to 432Hz, which is the natural frequency that aligns with the rhythm of nature.

The session allows vibrations to release blocked energies and restore balance which can help to reset the mind and give a deep sense of peace and focus.
